Wine tasting night 2

Trying 2013 Xanadu Sauvignon Blanc Semillon from Margaret River - SB is passionfruity(?) and gooseberry with grassiness from the Semillon. Region just like Bordeaux. No relation to Olivia Newton John.

 

Cliff Edge Reisling - Mount Langi Ghiran. UK folks don't like reisling. Good with Pacific fusion cuisine. Limey, fresh. From a national park in Western Australian. Very cool region. Slight acetone/kerosene smell typical of reisling.

 

Yarra Valley, Yering Station Village Chardonnay. I thought it tasted like toffee. Chablis is a chardonnay. The most widely grown white. This one clone of Mendoza/Gin Gin. Big (juice) and small (acid) berries. "Lovely bright acid taste." More like battery acid per Amy. Use French oal barriques tight wood so not much vanilla flavor added but some muscle & ageability. 8 months in barrel, three in bottle.

 

Xanadu 2010 Chardonnay - more minerally & much nicer. More robust, goes with bigger flavor food. More yeasty because they stir the lees ("batonnage").

 

On to the reds ... Yering Station village 2010 Pinot Noir.  Clear red, very berry. Great pinot tastes like stone fruits and truffles. I found it boring. He says it goes well with fish and is good served cool.

 

Yering Station Village 2007 Shiraz Viognier. Vanilla-y. A white grape. Shiraz ripens 10 days before Viognier. Viognier is an "unpleasant" wine. Just use the skins. The viognier has an enzyme that soften outs to tannins. Style stolen from Rhône Code Rhoti (?). Tasty.

 

Cliff Edge Shiraz. Mount Langhi Ghiran 2007. Plum boysenberry and spice. From same place as Reisling, a cool climate zone. Serious diurnal variation (40 to 15.) Longer ripening season, clearer flavor. I liked a lot. 50% whole branch. Spice and black pepper. A savory wine , good with lamb. Very savory.

 

Xanadu Exmoor Drive Cabernet 2010. Has a flavor component like black pepper. Cab has a thick skin but if you pick it 18 hours too early it tastes all wrong. Hard to taste it because of the skin.  Wait too late and it's a "ribena fruit bomb." Bordeaux like blend, this one with some Cab Sauv & Merlot (to add a plumpness, "approachability"). Ozzie ones can get a Eucalyptus/mint toilet freshener thing. Sage and oregano is okay.
