Cats and flats

Er, so I don't see anything where I've been looking about people accepting pets in apartments. I'd like a flat that would let me have a cat, specifically my Boo kitty after we've got all the quarantine stuff worked through.

Any suggestions or feedback? "Fuggedaboutit?" I'm looking for some specific information like "90% of places won't allow cats" or "you can usually have a cat with an $X deposit" etc. Or "you'll have better luck on Website X" or "Try Neighborhood S."

Yes, dad. They're not as bad as they used to be, though.

You may need to negotiate with the landlord. We did manage to get a clause in our last contract OK-ing the rats (well, technically 'one small rodent' since people don't like the word 'rat' so I didn't want to mention it) but we had to haggle a bit & ask nicely & so on.

Since you'll have 6 months slack (while Boo is in quarantine), I'm not sure whether to suggest that you mention it right up front (in which case you'll have v little choice of places, basically), or wait until you've been in Place X a couple of months, & then talk to the landlord (you could make up some shit about how your friend was going to take Boo but that's fallen through). Problem there is that if landlord remains intransigent you'll have to move again :-/

What she said. Asking nicely is often the key.

Good plan. Boo will be doing quarantine here, somewhere. Haven't figured out who will take her. Am somewhat kicking myself for not doing this back in February when I thought I ought to be doing it.

Most landlords don't officially allow pets, but I've found that if you drop it into negotiations about the point where you've found somewhere and have convinced them you look like a responsible human being, they can usually be persuaded to put a clause in the contract. It's worth remembering that good tenants are as much sought after as good flats.
