News worth being happy about

Last week a new species of orchid (and shrew!) were discovered in the Phillipines. Pretty! (Apparently no one cares about the shrew enough to take a picture.)

Also, in shocking (and yet cheering) news, young women are now making more money than men in several US cities. "Women of all educational levels from 21 to 30 living in New York City and working full time made 117 percent of men’s wages, and even more in Dallas, 120 percent." That's pretty cool in some ways; on the other hand, over time, the article notes, "among all men — including those with college degrees — real wages, adjusted for inflation, have declined since 1970." So while it's great that women are closing (and leaping over) the gap, it's not cool that part of the reason they're able to do so is because people are just flat out making less.
