So apparently there are three great Russian ballet companies - the Bolshoi, the Kirov (possibly also known as the Marinsky?) and the Mikhailovsky. Anyway, two of them are in town this summer, and I went with A to see the opening night of their season last night - unsurprisingly, Swan Lake. My review is here, but you can kind of guess what I thought of it if you know I nicknamed it "Escape from the Black Cockatoo."
There are a few different endings to Swan Lake, and last night's was the worst of them. It all boils down to this: Odette is not a tragic heroine if she doesn't die. That's all there is to it. Siegfried, he deserves to die, but for Odette not to die is like having Romeo and Juliet live.
Ah well, we had great seats and the orchestra played beautifully, but sometimes that's just not enough.
