Attack!

Ah, the vagaries of the LJ feed

Man, I spill my guts out day after day and I get more responses to a post about Team America than anything else! You guys! For the record, I was basically drawn to see it by the puppet sex scene, which was featured in This Movie Is Not Yet Rated, the documentary about the MPAA film censorship board. TMISNY had the cut scenes from sex bit, which cracked me up because the guys who wrote it basically put these scat and golden showers scenes in just so the censors would have something to cut. This made me very curious about the rest of the film, and it was, indeed a hoot and a holler. I also recommend TMISNY.

Meanwhile, in High Culture Land, shadowdaddy is off trying to get us some £10 tickets for Coram Boy, prior to heading off to the Spitalfields' Pancake Race (some kind of English Shrove Tuesday thing). I'm still working my way through Remembrance of Things Past and have made it to page 660 after taking a total break over my vacation. He really seems to have a good understanding of human nature, at least Western humanity. "The last time! To me, that appeared as something of immense significance, because I loved Gilberte. On her it would doubtless have made just as much impression as those letters in which our friends ask whether they may pay us a visit before they finally leave the country, requests which, like those made by tiresome women who are in love with us, we decline because we have pleasures of our own in prospect." The translation is frequently a bit stiff, but I am completely absorbed in it the second I pick it back up.

Holiday confusion.

Please explain to me this pancake day thing. Where I come from pancakes are thick and flat and served as a breakfast item only. I figured since I didn't have pancakes for breakfast today, I missed out. (Thin ones are called "crepes" and as they are fancy French food you are allowed to eat them for any meal.) What is pancake day about (other than Shrove Tuesday, which is something I also don't do or get)? How do you "celebrate" it? Are these pancakes or crepes, and are you supposed to roll them and/or fill them?

Me, favorite pancakes are blueberry with real maple syrup. Yum!

Coram Boy > Spamalot

WELL! It is about time I saw a show in London where I felt it was worth paying full price! And Coram Boy, with its huge cast, orchestra, and GORGEOUS 18th century music (aaaah!) is SO it. All that, and it still wasn't overdesigned. I'm not saying every single actor was perfect (just one a bit silly, but far outweighed by the Evilest Villain Ever), but with teen lust, baby killing, and orphans being ... well, I just can't say it, but ... I was caught up EVERY MINUTE of this show. Oooooh scary!

And then there was the singing. Aaaaaah!

Um, yeah, so it's sold out but EVERY day around 11 PM they post the tickets that have been returned, and every morning of a show, at around 10 AM, they sell the £10 seats they have, which are what we got, in the front row. (Alas, you must go in person to get these, but shadowdaddy was kind enough to do that for us - and there's a limit of 2.) So go if you can. rosamicula, I SO owe you for your enthusiastic review, as it is what pushed me to go!
