We went to the Grand Illusion last night to see Ascent, a Russian movie they are showing with their Futility of War series. I wasn't expecting anything uplifting, and at the end when it looked like all of the main characters were going to die I correctly assumed there would be no Hollywood style Deus Ex Machina to pull them out of their mess. It was bleak, but very beautiful and a movie that I think I will remember forever, like Flowers of Shanghai and Picnic at Hanging Rock (oddly enough made around the same time as Ascent).
The next three days look busy, aside from the fact that it's supposed to be the Bataan death march at work. I am hoping to go to the Asian Art Museum tomorrow evening to see their Hello Kitty exhibit, then to Motomotoyama's place for a party Friday. Saturday is an afternoon concert and an evening birthday celebration for my brother (which is also a concert but is the Asylum Street Spankers). Tonight is mahjong at the Panama Hotel. I should leave work now so I can eat before it's time to go there.
