The saddest story I've ever read (from The Violet Fairy Book)
It looks like the Andrew Lang fairy stories are online now (they probably have been for a while, I only noticed just now). This means that anyone can now read "The Story of a Gazelle," which is simply the saddest tale ever told. It has stuck with me since I was nine years old, when I worked my way through the entire set of these books, and even today I think of it and wish that I could mention it to people the way you can typical popular culture stuff. But while people might get my references to the Mines of Moria and Jawas, no one knows about the gazelle.
