Wow, the New York Times has declared that it's officially okay for me to have long hair despite the fact that I'm a greying harridan over the age of thirty who can barely make it down the street without her walker and her Geritol. Hurray!

The pathetic thing, of course, is that I have seriously considered cutting my hair because I consider it inappropriate for a woman of my age to look "girlish," but have found it difficult to part with it when I enjoy it so much. That's not to mention that when I ask people whose opinions I value, they say, "Oh, no no no!" (my father being among the "no" folks but also being the one I feel freest to ignore utterly.)

I feel lame that I feel validated by this silly bit of fashion fluff masquerading as a news article. Maybe I'll just hack it all off to Trinity length just to show that I don't care.

I would hardly consider your long hair as making you look "girlish". It's attractive, but not in an exclusively-youthful way.

Besides, does that mean that it's inappropriate for *me* to look girlish, too? I'll have to shave my head and put on a big ol' potbelly...

Yeah, vulture23 tends to look more girlish than you ;)

I really respect women who are over 50 and wear their hair long and naturally grey. For women who look less than 50, I don't even think about long hair as being "appropriate" or not; it seems like a silly question.

I think you should do with your hair whatever makes you happiest, m'dear. They are your tresses, after all!
