Why we need words like "penultimate"

I've been comparing recent shows to the Carmen I saw recently (apparently my review offended someone, who told me I should be nice to it because the actors had fun), and I've been thinking about what constitutes true badness. When something is really, spectacularly bad, it can actually be fun to watch. So tell me ... among the badness, how bad is bad? And should I see Battlefield Earth, or does "bad" have a limit, with that movie somewhere over the line?
